During the formation of Florida as we know it today, the names of areas changed many times.  Such is the case with the present day  St. Lucie Co. whose name was finally decided upon in 1905.  Previously it had been named the same for 10 years beginning in 1844.  In 1855 the name became Brevard County.

As the population grew other counties took form using areas designated by other names. 1917 saw the western section used to form Okeechobee Co.  In 1925 Indian River Co was formed using the northern part of St. Lucie Co.  Some of the  southeastern section became the northern section of Martin and Palm Beach Counties.
