Okaloosa County was formed in 1915 from parts of Santa Rosa and Walton Counties.  The county seat was originally Milligan (1915-1917).  Later it was moved to Crestview because of the possibility of flooding in Milligan.  Since this is a relatively new county, most people are looking for relatives in the parent counties.  However, there are great resources in Okaloosa for anyone doing research in the Panhandle.  Don't forget to look in all the surrounding counties:

Florida
Bay County
Escambia County
Jackson County
Santa Rosa County
Walton County
Washington County
Alabama
Barbour County
Coffee County
Covington County
Dale County
Geneva County
Houston County

Troy Public Library - Many of you have researched there and know how wonderful it is.  They are trying to get funding for a bigger facility.  They actually have a building site and are hopeful that soon all will be in order for a completely new library, rather than the expansion that was previously planned.  Please help if you can.

Do you have an ancestor who lived in the territory of Florida before 1845 statehood?  The Florida Pioneer Descendants Certification Committee would like to hear from you.

And if your pioneer was born in any county area before it was officially formed and named, a county award may also be waiting for you.

Certificates are presented annually at the Florida State Genealogical Society's Pioneer Banquet each Fall in conjunction with yearly Conference events.  Your application is an excellent way to honor those folks who braved hardships to settle previously unknown areas.

For additional information, see the website of Florida State Genealogical Society and click on "Florida Pioneer" at top of page.

Special GSOC Offer

We have a section for posting data that you contribute.  We encourage any who are willing to send copies of such things as birth, marriage or death certificates; funeral home records; homestead papers or other published sources you may have on people who lived in the area.  You may also send tips for researchers.   See the one Jo Nagel sent.  We will post them so others may be able to access them.

As always, please let me know of things you may wish included here.  Also, please consider contributing your own research so that other Okaloosa researchers might benefit from work you have already completed.   Help is always appreciated!
