The first Greek to actually walk on the bottom of the Gulf gathering sponges was Demosthenes Kavasilas in 1905. Before the use of underwater equipment and diving suits, sponges were gathered by hook and spear from along the shoreline and and using "Hooker" boats off the neighboring islands. This memorial to the Spongers of Tarpon Springs is located along the shoreline of the Sponge Docks across from the Historic Sponge Exchange. It is dedicated to all the spongers of Tarpon Springs, both the hooker/spear spongers as well as the spongers we have become familier with today and whose likeness is depicted by this memorial.
