The Civil War lasted from 1861 till 1865. There were over 618,000 causalities. While most people believe the war came about because of slavery issues, it really was much more complex. There were the economic and social differences whereby the South was based on a one crop (cotton) economy in which it used slave labor for its vast plantations, the North was focused on city life in which a society evolved as people of different cultures and classes worked together. Another issue of the day, was of those arguing for more states rights and those arguing that the government needed to have more control. This was an old issue and was heating up before Abraham Lincoln was elected president, but came to a head soon after his election. The Civil War began when confederates under General Pierre Beureguard opened fire at Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina at 4:30 a.m. with fifty cannons.
