Silver Springs

Silver Springs is located just to the east of Ocala on State Road 40 and is the site of one of the largest artesan springs in the world. The largest tributory on the Ocklawaha River is Silver River of which Silver Springs forms the headwaters..all part of the St. Johns River. Some of the original Tarzan movies and  many episodes of the television series "Sea Hunt" was filmed at Silver Springs. Ross Allen, a noted herpetologist,  founded the Silver Springs Reptile Institute here as well. In the 1950's Six Gun Territory, a western themed amusement  park opened, much to the delight of  Florida residents, where one could hang out in a saloon, ride in a stagecoach and  witness a shootout Sadly  it was closed in 1984, but today you can find the Silver Springs Nature Park in its place. If you have any photos, personal stories or history you would like to share, you may do so at the address below. Thanks!
