Marion County, FL Paupers



Below is a list I am compiling of persons placed on Marion County's pauper list. Unless otherwise indicated the individuals listed were taken from the Ocala Evening Star Newspaper. You will see as I add to this  list where some were removed or denied in the first place. Some of the reasons an individual was placed on this list was...widowed, out of work, ill, or taking care of others. Some were sent to a "poor farm," but more on this later. I will be adding to this list so keep checking back.

A - C



10-12-1898...A lady asked the board to increase the county support of Rachel Bailey. She is now on the list at $2 a month. Referred to McLeod for investigstion.

5-5-1897...The following person was placed on the pauper list...Harriet Barnes at $2 per month.

3-13-1918...Ben Boyd was placed on pauper list at $3 per month.

2-10-1915...The clerk was directed to draw a warrant monthly for $3, in favor of Sarah Brown for the benefit of Ruby Riley's children.

2-10--1915...Application for Mr. Dyas was refused.

2-10-1915...Si Johnson and Warren Evans were placed on the pauper list at $3 a month each.

10-5-1897...Mrs. Farmer, on pauper list at Marti City, was granted $2 additional allowance because of her eyesight; she could not sew, her fingers being almost disabled by rheumatism. She also wanted help to send her children to school. Referred to board of education.



G - I



1-26-1922...Bella Goins was ordered placed on the pauper list at $3 per month.

10-12-1898...Tom Hill, colored, was stricken from the pauper list.


J - L



2-10-1915...Mr. Ayer is directed by the board to allow widow's exzemption to Lucy Jones.

2-10-1915...Si Johnson and Warren Evans were placed upon the pauper list at $3 a month each.

5-5-1897...The following person was placed on the pauper list...Lucy Jacobs at $3 per month.  Follow-Up: Ocala Evening Star: 6-14-1898...Lucy Jacobs appealed for an increase of pauper fund from $2 to $3 a month. Referred to Mr. Carney.



M - O



2-23-1921...A. J. Marlow was ordered stricken from the pauper list.

1-4-1898...Charlotte Miller, an old negro woman, was put on at $2 per month.


P - R



1-4-1898...T. Prevatt will be dropped from the pauper list after this month.



S - U



2-10-1915...Alec Singletary was placed on the pauper list at $3.50 per month, and any further action in his case is referred to Commissioner Carn.

3-14-1911...On motion of commissioner Carmichael it was ordered that Nora Summers be placed on the pauper list at $3 per month.

1-4-1898...Mrs. Jennie Swindler will be dropped from the pauper list after this month. Follow-Up:  Mrs Janie Swindle was returned to the pauper list at $2.50 a month.



V - Z



8-11-1898...Mrs. Weatherbee's appeal for aid was granted and she was placed on the pauper list at $3 a month.

1-26-1922...Courtney Young was ordered taken off pauper list.
