Florida State Hospital
Chattahoochee

Finding individuals sent to the Florida State Hospital listed in old newspapers I have decided to list the information here. In no way is it my intention to embarrass  descendants of these individuals but offer up an aid to help in finding a lost ancestor. Often  these poor souls are lost to us in our hunt. Some were buried at the hospital, while others were sent home cured,or after having passed away at the hospital. Some were transfered to other facilities. There were many reasons for their commitment to the state hospital including dementia, postpartum depression, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and spouses with ulterior motives. It became a place where you were sent for just becoming old, as well. After years of searching for my great grandfather I finally found him at this very place. After sending for his death certificate I found he had been sent there for dementia. Sometimes the family being ashamed would list their loved ones as deceased, when in fact they were not, so if you are having trouble locating a person always check for this possibility. Many persons were only there for a time before being returned home cured. I will be adding articles about the hospital from time to time to give some history of the hospital, which wasn't always a positive narrative.
