Stephen C. Foster was one of America’s best loved musical storytellers. In 1851 he wrote The Swanee River (Old Folks At Home). In 1935 The Swanee River became the official state song replacing “Florida My Florida,” which had been adopted as the state song in 1913. There is a movement now underway to remove The Swanee River as Florida’s state song because some find the lyrics offensive. Below are two renditions of the song. (music only). |
