John was born at Worthington Springs, Columbia County, FL January 31, 1847 to Samuel Silas and Mary Jane (Stevenson) Brown. He enlisted in the Civil War at Fernandina on September 28, 1861 in Co. D Florida 10th Infantry Regiment, formerly known as Co. C 1st Florida Batallion. He was Musterd out on October 4, 1863 due to sickness. John reenlisted and was captured along with 30 other men August 1864, where he was carried to Norfolk, Virginia and then transferred to Point Look Out Mountain, Maryland and eventually pardoned. He received a pension for his service and on September 17, 1915 asked for an increase in his benefits.
John moved to Marion County, FL in 1868 where he resided until about 1885, before moving to Ozello, Citrus Co., FL. He was a farmer and a mail carrier between Ozello and Homosassa.
He married Catherine Margaret Simmons January 5, 1870 and four children were born to this union; Joseph, Martin, Henry William and James. After Catherine’s death on October 31, 1907, John married Callie J. Carroll, the marriage taking place in Ozello on April 5, 1908.
John died April 5, 1933 in Homosassa and is buried at the Stage Pond Cemetery there.
