Wilder, Martha
The Wilder Family
Hopkins M. & William Wilder, Jr. along with their half-brother, Samuel M. Clyatt, family, slaves and cattle left Lowndes County, Georgia in 1851. They had loaded all their possessions in wagons drawn by oxen and mules. Just imagine going a distance of 250 to 300 miles in that manner. In 1853 they were in what was then Hernando County when Hopkins came down ill and died on April 27, 1853 in Lake Charlapopka. He was buried under an oak tree on the lake shore. As far as I can determine this may very well have been in the vicinity of Inverness as that area was part of Hernando County and it was known as Lake Charlapopka in those days. It could have been by one of the many lakes in the area which were known as the Charlapopka Lakes. A while later in 1854 after Hopkins died, his wife Bathsheba Gross Wilder took charge and led the family to Lake Thonotosassa where they took up residence in the old Lewis home. Tragedy struck the family once again when on September 8, 1855, her fourteen year old daughter, Martha died from a snake bite. Martha became the first person buried in The Thonotosassa Cemetery.

Later on the family moved again but this time it was not all that far. Mrs. Wilder homesteaded 200 acres in the area where the Branch Ranch Restaurant is. Their log cabin was just west of the restaurant. Her son Calf and her granson George both served in the Florida House of Representatives. George was also elected Speaker of the House. The Wilders became leaders in the cattle industry of eastern Hillsborough County. Needless to say the Wilder Family is deeply ingrained in East Hillsborough County and Plant City history.
