Surveyed February 2000 by Wayne N. Carpenter. Photos added in 2006 by Angela Cassidy. Last updated by
Angela Cassidy on March 1, 2009.
Note: There are 8 graves without identification.
Directions: From the intersection of Madison & King streets in Quincy, take State Road 12 east toward Havana for
10.3 miles to Salem Rd/Hwy 159. Turn left (north). From Havana, take State Road 12 west toward Quincy, and about
1 mile from the last traffic light, turn right (north) on Salem Road. The cemetery will be on the right as you go up a hill
about 1.1 miles from State Road 12. The chain link gate appears to be locked, but it isn't.
[Some background information by Angela Cassidy] Some of the earliest settlers in the Little River area of Gadsden
County are buried in this cemetery. Many of these people moved from Little River and China Hill east to form the
community of Salem. When the railroad came through about a mile east shortly after 1900, Salem dwindled in size as
people moved closer to the railroad for commerce and formed the town of Havana. Many of the descendants of people
from Salem became the founding families of Havana and are buried in Woodland Cemetery in the Town of Havana or
in the Shelfer Cemetery about one mile east of Havana.
If only one name is in color, there is one tombstone photo, but if both of a person's names are in color, there are two
photos. One may be a military marker or a closer view of the text on the tombstone. At the bottom of the table is a
section on the genealogy of many of the people here. This information was shared with me by a trusted source; however,
as with any genealogical information, you should do your own research to reach the best conclusion that you can. This
information may just guide you to it. / Angela Boynton Cassidy

Correction to the survey: W. E. Laing is Walthour Eugene Laing, who is also listed as Walthour LAING. His wife was Josephine HINSON, the daughter of Daniel Murphy Hinson and Ann Nicholsen Hinson who show up on the survey of the Hinson Cemetery. There is one headstone for the two of them and a second for Walthour showing his CSA unit. He and Josephine were originally buried in the Hinson Cemetery, but my uncle had the headstones moved to Salem. Both stones are for the same man. Submitted by Dixie Smith Bowman | |||||
