Flagler County History.....

Flagler is located in the north central section of the Florida shore Atlantic beaches.  The family can enjoy the 19 miles of beach, as well as hiking, biking, and many other outdoor activities in other parts of the county.

The county was formed in 1917 from parts of St. Johns and Volusia counties.  The county was named for Henry Morrison Flagler who is responsible for much of Florida's growth due to his vision and construction of a railroad system for much of the east coast.  His first venture was in constructing a rail from the mainland to Key West.  He also was involved in real estate and built several hotels. He also was charitable with his empire in helping hospitals, churches and schools come into existence.

Bunnell is the county seat situated a bit inland. Although the beaches and outdoor activities are what one thinks of when you mention a county on the beach, agriculture is also a large part of the land usage.  Crops of cabbage, potatoes, pepper, squash and blueberries dot the country side.  One can also see cows and goats grazing.  Not so different from our ancestors lives in the area.  Perhaps just the methods have improved.

If history is of interest to you,  Flagler County provides historical self-guided walking tours around Bunnell and Flagler Beach so you may view history itself and learn of our heritage.
