A little known fact.....

When the original county of Desoto was formed out of Manatee Co in 1887, it contained 3,750 square miles, a comparible size to the state of Rhode Island. It extended from about thirty miles inland from the west coast to Lake Okeechobee, north to Polk Co, and south to Lee Co. Today Desoto Co contains about 650 square miles. In 1921 it was separated to create the 5 new counties of Desoto, Hardee, Highlands, Glades, and Charlotte.
