1910 - 2008

LAKELAND - Evelyn Sweat Bowen, 98, of Lakeland, Florida, died on November 22, 2008 in Murphy, NC due to heart failure.
She was born on March 10, 1910, in Mulberry, Florida, and was the daughter of Samuel Henry Sweat and Justine Bryan Sweat. She graduated from Mulberry High School in 1927 where she was valedictorian of her class. She received a two year degree in education from Florida Southern College and was awarded a teaching certificate in elementary education. She began her teaching career in Mulberry, where she taught the fourth grade at Mulberry Elementary School.
 She married Floyd B. Bowen in 1933 and they moved with their family to MT. Pleasant, Tennessee, in 1943 before moving to Lakeland in 1953. In Lakeland, she was active in many community organizations. After many years as a wife and mother, she returned to the teaching profession in her early sixties, enrolled in the University of South Florida in Tampa and graduated with honors in 1971 with a Bachelor's degree in education. She taught sixth grade math at Dixieland Elementary School until her retirement in 1980. She was a long time member of College Heights United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, Floyd B. Bowen.
She is survived by her children, Floyd B. Bowen, Jr. and his wife, Lois, of Austin, Texas; Joan Melvin and her husband, Michael, of FT. Lauderdale; Carol Ervin and her husband Richard, of Tallahassee; and John Bowen and his wife, Patricia, of Oldsmar, Florida. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
 The family will receive friends on Monday, November 24, 2008  at Heath Funeral Chapel with funeral services on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Heath Funeral Chapel.
