Biology Teacher & Assistant Principal


WINTER HAVEN - Barbara Jane George Melvin, 78, passed away Saturday night (Dec. 8, 2012) at home with family after over a year battling lung cancer.
 Barbara was born in Cypress, Illinois on October 13, 1934 to Dee and Ella Evans George. She graduated from Milliken University and then worked as a medical technologist.
 On September 16, 1961, she married Chester Melvin, a native of Winter Haven, and moved to Winter Haven and began working at Bond Clinic.

 Barbara served 30 years in the Polk School System
, starting as a Biology teacher and then as a Guidance Counselor at Westwood Jr. High and then as an Assistant Principal at Auburndale High School, with an MA from Rollins and her Specialist from USF.
 Barbara was an active member of First Christian Church and served as Deacon, Elder, Moderator, and Chairman of Finance and Stewardship. During her retirement she enjoyed traveling, investment club, theater, and spending time with family.
 She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Beth) Melvin of Jacksonville, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.
 Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters Norma George and Melba Peeler and brothers Wilbur, Carl, CD, and William George.
 The family will receive friends at Crisp-Coon Funeral Home on Friday December 14th. A Memorial Service will be held at the chapel of Crisp-Coon Funeral Home at 12:00 pm Saturday, December 15, 2012.
 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Polk Education Foundation or the
