KATIE MAE COMBEE – 95 – School Bus Driver - wife of Oris Combee
LAKELAND -- A longtime resident of Lakeland, Mrs. Katie Mae Combee will be remembered for the school bus route she drove for 28 years. Mrs. Combee died of heart failure Friday (April 28, 2006) at Tandem Health Care, Lake Parker. She was 95. Born Feb. 16, 1911, in Woodville, Mrs. Combee moved to Lakeland from there 88 years ago.
During World War II, Mrs. Combee's husband worked for the Department of Transportation. When the need for school bus drivers became an emergency, she volunteered her services. "She only worked an hour and a half a day," her son, Bill Combee of Lakeland said. Though the workday was short -- one run in the morning, another in the afternoon -- students remembered her for years. "She'd get stopped in stores. She liked getting recognized by kids." In 1997, the Polk County Historical Society inducted Mrs. Combee as a pioneer. The honor caught her by surprise. "They inducted new members every year. I don't think she was expecting it," her son said. A devoted churchgoer, Mrs. Combee taught Sunday school at Gapway Baptist Church for 30 years. "She was there every time the doors opened," her son said.
Mrs. Combee was preceded in death by her husband, Oris Combee.
She is survived by her sons, Donald Combee and William Combee, both of Lakeland; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
