WINTER HAVEN -- As a pianist and minister of music at San Hill Missionary Baptist Holiness Church, Mr. Alonzo "Bo" Barnes performed at numerous churches in Polk County. "He started playing at the age of 8," said his wife of 20 years, Donna Barnes, noting that he was mostly self-taught. "He had some teaching, but he mostly played by ear. "The retired maintenance engineer for Winter Haven Hospital died of cancer Tuesday (June 13, 2006) at Winter Haven Hospital. The lifelong Winter Haven resident was born on Oct. 13, 1960, and graduated in 1980 from Winter Haven High School, where he met his future wife. He was also a maintenance engineer at Winter Haven Hospital for 12 years before taking early retirement in January. He and his wife, who also plays the piano, owned and operated Flowers by Barnes in Winter Haven for seven years, where they worked together. "He helped do the arrangements," Donna Barnes said. In addition to playing the piano, Mr. Barnes sang tenor and had been a minister of music for at least 10 years at San Hill Missionary Baptist Holiness Church. >In addition to his wife, Donna Barnes, Mr. Barnes is survived by his mother, Lillie Mae Williams, Jacksonville; son, Quarakin McClendon, Detroit; daughters, Jeanna McClendon, Highland Park, Tyesha Barnes, and Vernetta Barnes, both of Winter Haven; brothers, Clarence Barnes, Thomasville, Ga., Robert, James, and Sammy Williams, all of Winter Haven; sisters, Amanda Nelson, Beatrice Williams, both of Jacksonville; three grandchildren. LAKELAND -- Mr. Emanuel E.L. Singleton of Lakeland died of anemia Monday (March 8, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Glory, Ga., he came to Lakeland from there 82 years ago. He worked in environmental services for the Polk County School Board for 10 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a former member of St. Luke Freewill Baptist Church.> Mr. Singleton is survived by his wife, Betty Evans Singleton; children, Debra Ann, Sanford, Leonard, Bernard, both of Jacksonville, Courtney, Lakeland. LAKELAND - Mrs. Izora D. Waldon peacefully passed away at home on August 23 of natural causes. She was a lifelong resident of Lakeland. She worked as a domestic engineer for 20 years and retired in the early 80's. She was a great woman and was loved by everyone she worked for. After retiring, she went fishing as much as she could until her health prevented her from doing so. Mrs. Izora Waldon, "Lady Zora" was born on Dec. 4, 1912 in Lakeland to the late Frank and Carrie Allen. At an early age she became a member of Mt. Pleasant AME Church and in 1991 became a member of Bethel Gospel Tabernacle where she remained until her departure to heaven. >She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy Waldon, Sr.; her son, Roy Waldon, Jr.; and brother, Hayward Allen. >She leaves to cherish her memories a loving and dedicated daughter, Barbara G. Davies of Lakeland, FL; 3 granddaughters, Debbie Crumbley (Mark), Michelle Davis and Victoria Daughtry (Dwayne) all of Lakeland; 1 grandson, Carlos Davis (LaNita) of Tampa, FL; 8 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. Visitation Fri., 5-7 PM, Coney Chapel; funeral, Sat., 11 AM, Bethel Gospel Tabernacle. WINTER HAVEN - Ellen Lucy Drayton 2107 4th St NE, Winter Haven, FL, died on July 14, 2008 at her residence. The cause of death was complications due to vascular disease. Mrs. Lucy was a Jefferson County native, but resided in the Florence Villa/Winter Haven area for more than 85 years. She was a self employed beautician by occupation but was also the owner and operator of the Lue's Kindergarten of Winter Haven. She was a member of the Hurst Chapel AME Church where she was active on the Usher Board. > She is survived by her husband, Eddie Drayton, Winter Haven, FL; Her children, Ronnie Drayton, Dwight Drayton, & Barbara J.
