Mrs. Susan Virginia Ross, who came to Lakeland from Virginia 12 years ago, died Friday night at Morrell Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements have not been completed pending arrival of relatives, but services probably will be held Monday at Socrum Baptist Church. Mrs. Ross had lived at Socrum for the past 2 years.Surviving are 3 sons, W. B. Ross, Milwaukee, R. B. Ross of St. Louis and I. J. Ross of Socrum; 4 daughters, Mrs. S. F. Hurst of Live Oak, Mrs. W. T. Ward of Socrum, Mrs. L. R. Roberts and Mrs. W. E. Woods of Lakeland; 3 brothers, J. H. and J. C. Tatum of Deland and L. A. Tatum of Knights; 3 sisters, Mrs. N. L. Perry and Mrs. J. W. Menshew of Barbersville, and Mrs. W. W. Vann of Bradford. The Gentry-Howe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Virginia Ross who died Friday night at Morrell Memorial Hospital were held yesterday ( Tuesday ) afternoon at 4:30 at the Socrum Church. A large crowd attended and there were many beautiful floral offerings. - Pallbearers were S. B. Merrion, W. T. Harrison, A. L. Harrell, J. L. Lloyd, D. H. O’Quinn and P. Busher. Gentry-Howe funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Hughey Robbins of Clay Sink, formerly of Socrum, were held this morning at 10:00 from the Socrum Baptist Church with Rev. J. E. Bryant of the Clay Sink Baptist Church officiating. Arthur Bryant was in charge of the musicMr. Robbins, 39 year old farmer, died in Brooksville hospital after and illness of 8 months. He lived in Socrum untill 5 years ago, when he moved to Clay Sink. >  He is survived by his widow, 6 children, Betty Larue, Thelma, Inez, Edward, Jose and Earl; his father, Charles S. Robbins of Socrum; a sister, Mrs. J. H. Lane of Richloam and 3 brothers, Henry of Medulla, Herman of Lake Wales and Daniel of Socrum. Interment was in Socrum Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Mallory, J. Ed Bryant, J. M. Nash, Eddie Osteen, Floyd Osteen, and Floyd Gandy.

LAKELAND - Mae V. Wiggins,  passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015, of natural causes. Mae was born August 30, 1917, and a lifelong resident. She was a member of one of the pioneer families of the Providence Settlement and Bethel Baptist Church. Her dogs were her pride and joy. She enjoyed quilting and cooking, especially chicken 'n dumplings and red velvet cake.> Preceded in death by her husband, J. C. Wiggins; daughter, JoAnne W. Strain; and 3 sisters and 4 brothers. >She is survived by son, Rabon Roswell Strain; granddaughter, Melba Kay Roberts; grandson, Charlton Roberts; great grandsons, Johnathan Harper, Mitchell Harper, J. C. Strain; great granddaughter, Lindsey Strain; and great great granddaughters, Kaylee and Kelsey Harper. Rev. S. C. Sloan, a former resident of Lakeland, died last night at his home in Collins, Ga. He contracted Typhoid Fever 3 weeks ago. > Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but the body will be brought here and interment will be in the family plot at Socrum.  >Rev. Sloan is survived by his widow, Mrs. Flossie ( Sherman ) Sloan; 8 children, Mrs. Roy Odum of Lakeland, Mrs. Myrtle Alderman of Brewster, Ernest Sloan of Atlanta, Ga., & Stanley, Viola, Louise, Truett and Lloyd Sloan all of Collins, Ga.; 2 sisters, Mrs. J. M. Hancock of Lakeland & Mrs. Addie Willis of Tifton, Ga.; 3 brothers, D. H. Sloan,Sr. , A. E. Sloan and Lacy Sloan all of Lakeland.

A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered at the Socrum Baptist Church yesterday afternoon to pay their final respects to the memory of Rev. S.C.Sloan, a former Polk Co., resident who died Sunday night in Collins, Ga. >Rev. J. L. Hampton, long time friend of the deceased, officiated. He was assisted by Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Milton, Rev. Bascom Sutton, Rev. Steve McClelland and Rev. Charles Hancock.
 The music was rendered by Mrs. Tom Cason, Mrs. E. D. Cason, Miss Alyne Malloy and Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Selph. Interment was in the Socrum Cemetery. Pallbearers, all nephews of the deceased, were Wright Catlett, Kenneth Sloan, D. O. Sloan, Kerfoot Bryant, E. O. Sloan and D. H. Sloan,Jr.
Smith and Dukes, morticians were in charge of local arrangements.

She was an owner and operator in the home healthcare industry. JoAnne was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Kathleen Area Historical Society. >She is survived by Mae V. Wiggins (mother), Lakeland; Charlton Prine Roberts (son), Lakeland, Melba Kay Roberts (daughter), Lakeland, Rabon Roswell Strain (son), Lakeland, Johnathan Adam Harper (grandson), Mitchell Robert Harper (grandson), Lindsey Kay Strain (granddaughter), Joseph Chance Strain (grandson). AUBURNDALE -- Mrs. Brenda Joyce Waddell of Auburndale died of a heart attack Sunday (Dec. 26, 2004) in Winter Haven. She was born in Lakeland on June 2, 1944, she was a lifelong resident. She was a housekeeper for Good Shepherd Hospice. She was a Baptist. >Mrs. Waddell is survived by her husband, Jerrol M. Waddell; son, Bruce Waddell, Winter Haven; daughters, Sabrina Crawford, Lakeland, Lisa Waddell, Winter Haven; brothers, Jerry Rayborn, Thonotosassa, Wayne Rayborn, Old Town; sisters, Minnie Lou Pope, Steinahathee, Faye Smith, Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren. DADE CITY -- Mr. Eugene T. "Cherokee" Bryant of Dade City, formerly of Lakeland, died of heart and lung failure Tuesday (Dec. 20, 2005) at Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City. He was born in Toombs County, Ga., on Aug. 1, 1933, he moved to Dade City from Lakeland one year ago. He was a truck driver for AOC in Lakeland for 15 years. He was a Baptist. >Mr. Bryant is survived by his daughters, Debbie Graham, Regina O'Neal, both of Lakeland; sons, Darrell Bryant, Lakeland, Raubon Bryant, Rincon, Ga.; sisters, Eunice Dickie, Brenda Tyson, both of Georgia; brothers, Henry Copeland, Marcus Copeland, both of Dade City, Jim Jewel, Bobby Copeland, Melvin Copeland, Pete Copeland, all of Georgia; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.  > Visitation will be Friday at Countryside Funeral Chapel.  LAKELAND - Mr. Raymond Herbert Bryant, died of dementia Thursday April 12, 2007 . Born in Lakeland on August 26, 1928, he was a lifelong resident. He was a supervisor with the city of Lakeland in the Public Works Department, retiring in 1985. He was a member and deacon of Fellowship Church Assembly of God, and a member of the Fellowship Church Board for more than 12 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

LAKELAND - Mrs. Karen McLaughlin Bryant went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 2, 2017. She was born in Plant City, FL. Karen is a member of First Baptist Church at The Mall. She worked as a floral designer for many years. Karen graduated from Plant City High School and received a degree in Floral Design from a college in the West Palm Beach area. Karen's passions included fishing, hunting, and she loved her arts and crafts. In addition to making flower arrangements as her job, she especially enjoyed making floral arrangements for people she felt needed cheering up.> Karen was preceded in death by her mother and father, Jo Ann and Sammie McLaughlin, Jr.; her brothers, Sam and Keith.> Karen is survived by her husband, John; nephew & niece, Sammie & Nickie McLaughlin; aunt & uncle, Pauline & LeRoy Crouch; brothers & sisters-in-law, Margaret Bryant, Irvin & Carolyn Bryant, James Bryant, Harry & Claire Bryant, Joyce Bryant Kendrick and a host of nephews and nieces. LAKELAND - Sandra "Sandy" Brooks Amos, of Lakeland, FL, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013 surrounded by her loving children at the Tri-county Nursing Home in Trenton, FL due to renal failure. She was born December 28, 1941 in Lakeland, FL to the late L.V. and Doris (Brosie) Brooks. Sandy married her Kathleen High School sweetheart, Joe Amos, 53 years ago. She was a homemaker for many years. Sandy never met a stranger and was always volunteering. She volunteered for the schools while her children were there and then later for nieces and nephews. Sandy volunteered for Lakeland Regional Medical Center in the E.R. as a "Pink Lady" and loved it. For many years, Sandy & Joe coached girls softball for Miss Lakeland softball.
>Survivors include: sons Terry Amos, Jacksonville, Dennis Amos, Lawrenceburg , TN, Joseph "Jaybird" Amos (Joyce), Polk City; daughters Virginia "Ginger" Jeffries (Keith), Cross City, and Elizabeth "Beth" Amos (Steve), Lakeland. Sandy and Joe also raised three of their nieces and nephews: Kim Branthoover (Hap), Debbie and Eddie Amos, all of Lakeland, sisters Sharon Ely (Gary) and Sheryl Parada (Hector) of Lakeland. She also had 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. DOVER - Mr. Donald D. Bellach, died of blood cancer Wednesday Sept. 24, 2008 . He was born in Brooksville, FL., on Feb. 22, 1919. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII where he served as a convoy escort. After a 20-year career in the Navy, he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of the Florida Fly Wheelers and he restored over 100 antique fly wheel engines.  >Mr. Bellach is survived  by his sister Alta Cordia Surrency, Dover, FL., son Tony Bellach and wife Dottie, granddaughters Kimberly Roth, Melanie Williams, great granddaughter Zjani Wynne, great grandsons Austin Williams, Brandon Williams, all of Albuquerque, N.M.

Mildred joined Lake Wire (Abundant Life) Church of God after growing up in Bethel Baptist Church. >She was preceded in death by her husband Jake Knight, daughter Jahala Watson, grandson Skylar Watson. > She is survived by her companion T.M. Mrs. Ash had worked as a teacher's aide for 18 years at Padgett Elementary School, and as a Sunday School teacher at Parkview Baptist Church. Prior to her husband's death in 2002, they had a small craft and woodworking shop. >Mary is survived by her son Chuck and his wife Marilyn of Troy, AL, two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Emma was a member of Kathleen Baptist Church. > Emma was preceded in death by her parents, C. J. and Vester Johnson; husband, Robert E. Barfield, Sr.; brother, J. C. LAKELAND - Mr. Arthur L. "Doc" Higgins, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center due to complications of a stroke. Doc was a lifelong resident of Lakeland, born in "Socrum" on May 10, 1930. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. He will be sadly missed by Reba, his wife of 60 years; two daughters, Linda Higgins and Sharon (Steve) Black; two grandchildren, Chris (Amanda) Black and Laura (Carlton) Taylor; one great-granddaughter, Carlee Taylor; family members, Bruce (Marion) Baker and Laura Lynn (Dale) Dearing. > Mr. Higgins was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Higgins. LAKELAND - Douglas E. Marsh of Lakeland went to be with the Lord on Friday September 29, 2017 surrounded by family. Doug was born in Crump, MI to Lester and Martha Marsh, on February 26, 1932. Doug was the realtor, builder and broker for his own business DE Marsh before retiring. He enjoyed the stock market, spending time with family, and his dog Precious. However those who knew him best will always remember him for his sense of humor. > Doug is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and son Kevin Sholts. >  Doug Marsh is survived by beloved wife Patricia, children Wade Marsh, John Marsh, Ronda Comparoni and husband Pete, Kimberly Martin, Robin Dux and husband Leroy, 20 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren, one great great-grandchild; along with a host of other family and friends. He was a retired accountant for Owens Illinois Glass. > Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arlie F. McCoy and Ossie V. Eddy McCoy and son, Douglas A. McCoy. > He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margie A. McCoy and children, Lu Ann Perkins (Harold) of Elizabethton, TN and D. Craig McCoy (Diane) of Lakeland, FL; brother, Fay McCoy (Elaine) of Haines City, FL; sister, Doris Yost of Fairmont, WV; 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Don was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. LAKELAND - Mrs. Barbara Joan O'Steen died of respiratory failure Sunday (Dec. 14, 2008). Born in Cheltenham, England on Nov. 28, 1939, she came here from Tampa in June of 2006. She was a homemaker. >Mrs. O'Steen is survived by her husband Jonathon P. O'Steen, Lakeland; son Robert O'Steen, Tampa; brothers Ronald Brookes, Leslie Brookes, David Brookes (Ce), Terry Brookes (Liz), Roy Brookes (Jane), all of Cheltenham, England; sisters Valerie Coombe (Pete), Janet Harley, Margaret Marian (Dave), all of Cheltenham, England, Jenny Brannon (Frank), Lakeland.
