BARTOW - John L. "Luke" Radford passed away from natural causes Thursday, October 24, 2013 in Bartow. Born January 7, 1916 in Tarrytown, GA, he was the son of the late Andrew and Dora Belle Radford, Mr. Radford was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving in WWII. He was a longtime employee of U.S. Steel. Luke was also a longtime member of Lake Buffum Baptist Church in Fort Meade. >He is preceded in death by his wife Louise Radford, and is survived by his son Johnny Radford Ozelle of South Carolina; grandson Johnathan Radford & Amanda of South Carolina; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 26, 2013  at the Lake Buffum Baptist Church in Fort Meade. Services will follow at 11 00am at the church. FORT MEADE - Nobie Margaret Rhoden of Fort Meade, FL, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at her residence, due to natural causes. Mrs. Rhoden was born November 4, 1921 in Cannon, GA. She moved from North Carolina to Bartow in 1947 and later to Fort Meade in 1981. She was a homemaker and faithful member of Lake Buffum Baptist Church. She touched the lives of many people with her sweet nature and grace. Although short in stature, her class and seemingly endless supply of kindness, commanded respect from anyone fortunate enough to come in contact with her. Her giving heart will always be remembered. Mrs. Rhoden maintained her trademark positive attitude and sharp mind all the way to the end. >She is survived by her husband of 68 years Rayford Rhoden of Fort Meade, two daughters Dorsey Wadell of Asheville, NC and Betty Blades of Lakeland, son Harold Rhoden of Fort Meade, sister Amy Brown, and brother Harold Johnson, five grandchildren including Brad (Julie) Rhoden of Lakeland; and eight great grandchildren. >Funeral service will be at Lake Buffum Baptist Church at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 9, 2012, Kenny Slay officiating. FORT MEADE - Mrs. Nancy Coryell Rhoden passed away Fri., Sept. 28, 2012 in Lake Wales due to heart failure. Mrs. Rhoden was born July 20, 1943 in Tampa, FL and has been a longtime resident of Fort Meade for many years. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and a member of Lake Buffum Baptist Church, Fort Meade. Mrs. Rhoden, along with her husband, owned Rhoden Enterprises producing and selling fishing lures world wide. She and her husband also formerly owned the Eager Bait Co. in Bartow. >Mrs. Rhoden was preceded in death by her son, Keith Russell Rhoden.  >She is survived by her husband, Lewis C. FORT MEADE - Mrs. Helen Joyce Huggins McSwain Cook passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, in Lakeland, FL. Mrs. Cook was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Lakeland, FL, and was a longtime resident of Fort Meade. She was a retired citrus sectionizer for several area packing houses, a very avid Rays fan, and a member of First Baptist Church, Fort Meade, where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class. Mrs. Cook was a former VBS teacher, Sunday School teacher, and the first W.M.U. director of Lake Buffum Baptist Church in Fort Meade. Growing up in a very large family, Mrs. Cook learned family was very important, and she devoted her life to taking care of each one of her family members and loved ones. > Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by two husbands, Samuel Albert McSwain, Jr.  < The father of her children ) and Preston Cook. LAKELAND -- Mr. R.V. McSwain had a genuine love for people and left behind a rich legacy of generosity."My dad had a very outgoing personality. He never met anyone he didn't know. He simply loved people. He would give his last dime to someone if they were in need," said his daughter, Shelia Wetterer, of Lakeland.The retired deputy tax collector for Polk County died from complications of Alzheimer's disease Thursday (May 11, 2006) at Valencia Hills Health and Rehab. He was born in Fort Meade on Aug. 20, 1921, he lived in Peoria, Ill., for a while where he met his future wife."My mother and father worked for the same company, Caterpillar Tractor, but they did not know each other," Wetterer said."Until one day, the streetcar my mom was riding on caught on fire and my dad saved her. My mom still has a scar from that accident," Wetterer said. Later the couple moved to Lakeland. Mr. McSwain worked for Polk County for a number of years before retiring in 1984 as a deputy tax collector. Mr. McSwain was a member of the Lakeland Shrine Club and Egypt Temple Shrine of Tampa, where he served on the hospital committee. He would dress as a clown and drive his tiny car in the local Christmas parades, his daughter said. Some of his other hobbies were traveling, fishing, dancing and exploring the great outdoors. He and his wife attended Gapway Baptist Church. Meade was fatally injured at Live Oak, Florida, Thursday, Jan. 26, 1967 when the bulldozier he was operating struck a natural gas transmission pipe line. Mr. McSwain was born in Fitzgerald, Ga. and moved to Ft. Meade in 1919. He was employed by Lamb Brothers Construction Company, a member of the Baptist Church and a Vetran of WWII . Mr. Young was born in Alturas, FL on February 11, 1940 and was a lifelong resident of Polk County. He was a retired industrial mechanic for Vigoro Industries and IMC Chemical and Fertilizer. Mr. Young grew up in Fort Meade and spent many of his younger years in the Lake Buffum area where his great-grandparents were some of the founding members of Lake Buffum Baptist Church. As a young man, he worked for Warren Griffis in the Fort Meade Barber Shop as a barber, graduated Fort Meade High School in 1958, and has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Meade for many years. > Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents, Benny Elijah Young and Ruth Campbell Young; grandson, Vince Young; brothers, Donald Young and Gerald Young; nephew, Doug Young; and brother-in-law, Tony Guthrie.

AUBURNDALE - David Wayne Young passed away from respiratory failure Monday, August 20, 2012 in Bartow. Born May 3, 1952 in Bartow, Mr. Young was the son of the late David E. Young and Norma Young. Mr. Young was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for International Market World in Auburndale for 25 years. >Mr. Young is survived by a son, Matthew Young of Auburndale, daughter, Heather Young of Winter Haven, mother, Norma Young of Bartow, three sisters: Bonnie Byrd (Benny) of Alturas, Rosemary Golden (Mike) of Polk City, Susan Blackner (Raymond) of Mulberry, and two brothers: Jimmy Young (Theresa) of Bartow, and Michael Young (Ruby) of Heath, Ark. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Christopher, E.J., and Kayleigh. Arrangements are being handled by Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow where the family will receive friends Wednesday, August 22nd from 6PM to 8PM.
