LAKELAND -- Mrs. Alice E. McCall of Lakeland died of heart failure Tuesday (July 25, 2006) at Highlands Lake Center. She was born in Marianna on Dec. 2, 1911, she was a longtime resident of Lakeland. She was a sectionizer for Ben Hill Griffin Inc. in Bartow. She was a Baptist. > Mrs. McCall was preceded in death by her husband, Amos R. LAKE WALES - Bertha M. Meeks, died Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale from complications of a stroke. Born June 7,1916 in Havana, FL, Mrs. Meeks has been a resident of the area 68 years. She was of the Baptist faith.  > She was preceded in death by her first husband Bill Anthony & her second husband Ernest Meeks and her companion Grady Brown.  >  Mrs. Meeks was survived by her daughter: Linda & husband Moss Flannery of Lake Wales; three sons: Ronald & wife Sandra Anthony of Angleton, TX, Carroll & wife Judy Anthony of Anderson, S.C., Billy Lee & wife Sharon Anthony of Highland City; sister: Vinnie Clayton of Lakeland; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren & 19 great great grandchildren. >PEGGY McNEAL WILKERSON – 74 - Retired School Bus Driver
LAKELAND -- For many years, Mrs. Peggy McNeal Wilkerson worked with children, many of whom were handicapped, at her home and as a driver and teacher's aide in Polk schools. "She and my dad even kept handicapped kids here in their home after we grew up," said her daughter, Lynda Woodbury of Winter Haven. "They kept five to six kids. The most she had at one time was four." Mrs. Wilkerson, a retired school bus driver and teacher's aide, died of cancer Sunday (June 27, 2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was born in Teague, Texas, on Sept. 24, 1929, she came to Lakeland from Ellenton, Ga., in 1939. She graduated from Lakeland High School. Mrs. Wilkerson's career with the School Board spanned 30 years. She worked as a bus driver primarily for handicapped students later in her career. She was a teacher's aide at Marion Lee Training Center, now the Doris Sanders Learning Center. Mrs. Wilkerson retired in 1994. She was an active member of Ardella Baptist Church since 1960, where she was a member of the Golden Agers and a former Sunday school teacher. "She kept the nursery for years. Right up until she got sick, she was an active assistant teacher for the 2-year-olds through the church nursery," Lynda Woodbury said. > In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Wilkerson is survived by her husband of 56 years, Virgil Wilkerson; son, Michael Wilkerson, Lakeland; daughter, Sharon Johnson, Mulberry; brother, Jack McNeal, Lakeland; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. LAKELAND - Mrs. Anna Varese Lunn Lewis passed away from cancer March 20, 2007 at home. She was born in Christina community to the south of Medulla, Fla., in 1912 to Henry B. "Bert" Lunn and Maggie English Lunn. A descendent of one of the pioneer families of this area, her grandfather, Alfred W. Lunn homesteaded the section west of Lunn Road between Ewell and Shepherd Roads shortly after the Civil War.  She attended Medulla Elementary School and graduated from Mulberry High School. She received a B.S. degree from Florida Southern College, and was a member of the FSC Alumni Assn. She taught school for 30 years. Her first three years were at Mulberry Elementary and the remaining 27 were at Medulla Elementary. She was active in the Polk County Retired Educators Association and took particular interest in their scholarship program for future teachers. A faithful member of Medulla Baptist Church for over 75 years, she taught Sunday school until three years before her death. Always busy, she especially enjoyed reading china painting, needle work, word puzzles and gardening. > She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harry H. Lewis, and son, Henry B. "Bert" Lewis. > She is survived by 1 daughter, Harriette (James) Taylor, 1 granddaughter, Lisa (Albert) Chattelle, 3 grandsons, Eric (Joy) Taylor, John (Tina) Lewis, all of Medulla, and Rick (Kim) Lewis of Polk City; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild. Funeral services for Anon Lee Morgan of Medulla, will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Fitzgerald Cemetery in Medulla. Mr. Morgan died late Monday night following a stroke. He was rushed to Morrell Hospital, but death came a few hours later.  Mr. Morgan was born in Taylor County, but had lived in Polk County practically all his life. He had resided at Plant City for a time, however and also at Fort Meade in addition to Medulla. > Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. S. F. Acree of Medulla and Mrs. Lester Harris of Nichols; Three sons Claude of North Carolina and Don and Bob, both of Dayton, Ohio and Two sisters, Mrs. Ada Carlton of Perry and Mrs. Loraine Moore of Plant City. Mr. Morgan had been a farmer. Rev. Claude Hardin will officiate at the funeral service. A. M. Seigler Funeral Home is in charge.

LAKELAND - Helene 'Max' Reynolds passed away March 16, 2017, at B.R.M.C. Helene was born in Bayonne, N.J. on July 4, 1946, to Robert & Helen (Brtan) Brown. She moved to Lakeland from Virginia 45 years ago. She was an LPN and worked at L.R.H.M.C and was of the Catholic faith. Helene is survived by her husband Danny Reynolds, daughters Melissa Pennewell, Angie Reynolds, sons Kris (Amanda) Pennewell, Mark (Kristin) Pennewell, James (Jennifer) Pennewell, Nick (Ruth) Pennewell and Andrew Reynolds, 10 grandchildren and former husband Wayne Pennewell. LAKELAND - Curtis Pipkin passed away, as a result of cancer, Thursday, March 29, 2012. Born, November 24, 1921 in Lakeland, Florida, Mr. Pipkin was a lifelong resident of Polk County. He attended Georgia Military Academy and Montverde Academy. Mr. Pipkin was an honorably discharged veteran of the Merchant Marines, where he served during World War II. He was the owner/operator of Pipkin Dairy. Mr. Pipkin was a member of Ruby Street Church of God. > Mr. Pipkin was preceded in death by his daughter, Pam Pipkin. He is survived by wife, Mary Pipkin; sons, Sam Swann, Greg Pipkin, Jeff Pipkin, Jeff Flagg and Jody Flagg; daughters, Lexie Pipkin and Joy Barlow; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. LAKELAND - Julius Harvil Glass passed into the loving arms of our Father on Sunday, June 15, 2008, after suffering from cancer. Glass was born in Jakin, Ga. June 8, 1930 to James W. Glass and Ruby Nell (Hill) Glass. He was a resident of Lakeland, Fl.  Glass served 9 years in the Navy, during and after the Korean War. He was a patriot. He loved fishing and sailing and fixing engines and telling tall tales. He was a great story teller. > He is survived by his wife, Eileen Glass and his daughters, Alice Dent, Robin Lane, Sheryl Stradley and step-daughter Bobbi Jo Williamson. LAKELAND - 'Max' McDwain Glass of Lakeland, passed away October 13, 2015. Known to many as Coach Glass, he was born in Bartow to parents James and Ruby Glass.  > Max is survived by his wife Shirley; sons David (Diane), Bob (Laura) and Larry (Vicky) Glass; daughter Sabrina (Joey) Tomasina; grandchildren Michael, Chelsie, Dalton, Lizzie, Justin and Shelby; great-grandson Kai; brother Jim Glass and sister Dean Lavar. He was a staunch Lakeland Dreadnaught Booster; coached youth football and baseball; enjoyed fishing on the Withlacoochee River; was a long time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church; cherished his time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 16 at the Lakeland Funeral Home, 2125 S. Bartow Rd, Lakeland, with a funeral service at 11am. Interment will be at the Fitzgerald Cemetery, also in Lakeland. MEDULLA - Murray Melton Haskew passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center due to respiratory failure. Murray was born in Medulla, Florida on March 17, 1932 to John and Lutie (Hicks) Haskew. At age nine Murray moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he grew into adulthood. He attended Military Clemson A & M College and then served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Medulla in 1955 and attended Florida Southern College. Murray taught science and agriculture at Southwest Junior High School and Lakeland Highlands Junior High School. He actively led young F.F.A. students and loved farming, fishing, sports, and animals. He was a lifelong member of Medulla Baptist Church. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. > Murray is survived by wife Melody (Ross) Haskew, sons Scott, Mark, Kyle, and John Haskew, daughter-in-law Amber (Smith) Haskew, and grandchildren Hannah and Luke Haskew. A viewing will be held Thursday, March 6, at Medulla Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held Friday at Medulla Baptist Church. Interment will be at Fitzgerald Cemetery. Flowers are welcome.
