James passed away May 25, 2010. He was born in Medulla,Fl. on March 21, 1937,son of Dewey S. & Ethel A.(Sapp) Carter. He served in the Coast Guard during Korean Conflict as an E-5/MM2. He worked for the Lakeland Police Dept as a motorcycle officer. 13 years on the force and attained the rank of detective , after seperating he spent time working for Owenby Auto Parts. He is survived by his wife of 36 yrs; 3 sisters; 1 brother; 2 sons ; 3 daughters; sister-in-law and first wife.; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Dennis was born Sept. 25, 1951 in Bartow,Polk Co.,Fl. He was a vetran of the U.S.Air Force serving during the Vietnam War; he was also a member of the Faternal Order of Police (FOP), Lodge # 46; Sheriffs Honor Guard; Noah's Ark; and worked with the Special Olympics. Dennis began as a Deputy Sheriff with the Polk Co.Sheriff;s Office in 1976, during which time he served various city and state law enforcement agencies. He was most recient a detention deputy. Dennis was preceded in death by his father James Ross Jacobs; he is survived by his wife; 1 son and 1 daughter; and his mother; 2 sisters and sisters-in-laws,and several other family members.
Funeral services were held-in the chapel at Oak Ridge Funeral Home with Interment in Sunrise Cemetery in New Haven WVA.
Daniel Patrick -
Daniel was 60, born on February 11, 1951, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Daniel died October 8, 2011. He was adopted by William Virgil Elliott and Clara Wicker Elliott of Haleyville, Ala. The family moved to Winter Haven in 1952 where Daniel was raised, he attended Winter Haven High School and was an Eagle Scoutt, he later earned an associates degree from Polk Community College before joining the Winter Haven Police Department in 1972 as a police officer for over 26 years where he moved up through the ranks and retired as Lieutenant in 1998.
Daniel is survived by his daughter, Jennifer who is also a Police Officer at the Winter Haven Police Department, a son Corey Elliott and his wife and 2 grandchildren.
Friends and family gathered at the Winter Haven Police Department Training Center, on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011.

Larry Paul Bowen was 67, he was born in Babson Park Dec. 7, 1938 and was a life long resident of this area. He was a retired Police Officer and a Baptist.
Larry is survived by his son, Larry Paul Bowen Jr., of Bartow; his daughter Rebecca Adams, Bartow; brothers; James H. Bowen,Bartow, David Wayne Bowen, Orlando, and Daniel Perry Bowen, Georgia; and 4 grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Saturday Jan. 14, 2006 at Lake Ruth Baptist Church in Bartow.
John Henry, Jr. - Deputy
Lakeland- John passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at home of cancer. John was born on Oct. 31, 1960, the son of Jack and Joyce Schlichting, he served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Polk Co. Sheriff's Office for 26 years, retiring in 2005.
John is survived by his wife Laura; sons, Wayne and his wife,and Kriss; daughter, Brandiseveral grandchildren and Lucy and Reese, his loyal K-9' companions; sisters, Donna and Karen and several nieces and nephew's.
A meorial of rememberance was held at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Jan. 23, 2010. The family thanked everyone for their support and prayers during the 2 years of John's battle with cancer. - ( Ledger-Jan.22, 2010 )

LAKELAND - Janie Allen Luster, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center due to respiratory failure, with her family at her side. As a faithful member of Harmony MB Church, she served as a member of the Usher Board #1, and Women's Bible Class. She was also a member of City Wide Ushers.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph "Bo" Luster.
She leaves to cherish her memories a loving family: daughters, Janie Wright (Elijah) and Shirley Edmond (Arthur) of Lakeland; son Gregory Boyd (Linda), Columbus, GA.; 3 sisters; 1 brother; a host of grands, great grands, and great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

ANTHONY DAVIS - 41 - Corrections Officer
MOULTRIE, GA. - Mr. Craig Anthony Davis of Moultrie, Ga. died Monday, April 23, 2012 at home, after a long battle with cancer.
Craig was born in Lakeland on March 16, 1971, he held an Associate Degree in criminal justice. He was a U.S.Army Vetran and a Corrections Officer for the State of Georgia with Autrey Prison in Pelham. He was a Baptist.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife Lorrie Lefebvre Davis; sons Jacob, Kaleb , Joseph and Kristopher Davis; Parents; Carol Ann Glass, Lakeland, Farris and Janet Davis of Moultrie ,Ga. , grandfather J. W. Peavy, Lakeland; brother, Allen Davis, Longwood, Fl. .
Craig was predeceased by his grandparents Lucille and William BYRD, Pappy Davis and Velma Davis and Ruth Peavy.
Funeral service was held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Baker Funeral Home.

Paul "J. P." - 64 - Retired Probation Officer -
Polk City, Florida - Mr. John Paul Jones passed away Monday Nov. 1, 2010 in Lakeland. He was a native of Winter Haven and was a Winter Haven Police Officer, a Polk County Sheriff's Deputy with PolkCounty Correctional and retired as a Probation Officer. He was also a member of Florida FOP and a U.S.Marine, during the Vietnam era.
John is survived by his wife of 33 years, Katie Jones of Polk City, sons, Eric ( Candace ) Jones and Frank ( Dina ) Roderus, daughters, Dawn ( Paul ) HAIIFLICH and Melisse ( Brian ) EISEMAN, brother Terry Jones ( Michelle ). 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

BARTOW - Wayne Jackson Wyant, Sr., age 76, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012 at his residence in Bartow due to respiratory failure. Wayne was born, June 19, 1936 in Baldwin, FL, he was a member of the Wildwood Baptist Church, where he previously served as treasurer. Mr. Wyant retired from the Polk County Sheriff's Office with over 27 years of service and also served in the Florida Air National Guard. Wayne was the Owner of Wyant's Photography.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Wyant of Bartow; two daughters, Diane Pannebaker & husband Parker of Bartow and Edie Roden & husband Jim of Winter Haven; three sons, Wayne "Jack" Wyant, Jr. & wife Pam, John Wyant Sr. & wife Crystal and David "Pudge" Wyant & wife Dawn all of Bartow; sister, Mary Price of Waynesville, NC and brother, Ernest Brock of Panama City; fourteen grandchildren & six great grandchildren. Wayne was the youngest of 13 children.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, September 12, 2012 ,at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow.

LAKELAND - Howard E. Hurd, 73, passed away April 6, 2011 of heart failure.
Mr. Hurd was born in Brighton, AL on July 27, 1937. He was a veteran of the Air Force and past Fleet Administrator for the Office for overPolk County Sheriff's 20 years. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Mr. Hurd is survived by his sons, Randy and Ronny Hurd; daughters, Leigh Anne Fox and Alecia Dotson; sisters, Sara Savage and Frankie Walsh; grandchildren, Amanda Rychel, Cole and Kayleigh Fox, Logan Alderman and Landon Dotson.

Deputy Sheriff Smith Killed by Negro - ( Ledger, Jan. 18, 1922 )
Word was recieved at Sheriff Logan's office Monday night of the fatal shooting of Deputy Sheriff, O.T.Smith at 11:30 Monday night at Nalaea by a negro named Godbolt.
Godbolt is alleged to have fired at E. Hartzog, foreman of a sawmill at Nalaea after arguing over an account, and it was this charge that Smith attempted to place Godbolt under arrest when he was fatally wounded.
Sheriff Logan and a posse are scouring the county around Nalaea but at an early hour this morning, no trace of Godbolt had been found.
LAKELAND - Mr. Leon Roland Cobbs, age 82, died of heart failure Tuesday (March 13, 2007) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Detroit, MI., on December 1, 1924. He served in the U.S. Army for 26 years, and was a former Bartow Police Department officer. He was a member of St. John Primitive Baptist Church of Medulla.
Mr. Cobbs is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn (Sweet) Cobbs of Lakeland; sons, Fred Cobbs of Atlanta, GA., Bobby Cobbs of Lakeland, FL.; daughters, Sheila Cobbs of Lakeland, Tina Baker of Ft. Meade, FL., Leona Cobbs of Atlanta, GA.; 18 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.

EAGLE LAKE - Gerald "Jerry" H. Grimes, 75, passed away of heart failure Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at his home in Eagle Lake.
Born September 5, 1937 in Barnesville, OH, Jerry served in the United States Navy for 21 years and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal (5th award), Sailor of the Month, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He retired from the Active Duty on August 22nd, 1975. Jerry started a career with the Polk County Sheriff's Office as a correctional officer in September 1975. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in June 1993 after 19 years.
He was a member of Parkland Baptist Church in Winter Haven; a member of the American Legion, VFW and Fleet Reserve Assn.
Jerry is preceded in death by his son, Michael K. Grimes and his parents, Hobart and Mildred Grimes.
He is survived by: his wife of 51 years, Shirley Grimes; 2 sisters, Ruth Vaughn of Hastings, MI and Alice Elizabeth Siddle of Columbus, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 15, 2013 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven.

Lakeland - Frank M. Williams, Sr. of 201 W. Magnolia St., died Monday night in a local nursing home. A native of Monticello, Ga. he had lived in Lakeland for more than 50 years. He was formerly a motorcycle patrolman for the Lakeland Police Dept and later named Chirf of Police, he went on from Deputy, Constable, Probation Officer and was elected as Sheriff of Polk County and served from Jan. 1949, until Aug. 1950. He was a veteran of WWII a member of the American Legion and he was a Baptist.
Surviving him are 2 sons, Frank M. Williams Jr. of Lakeland and Milton L. Williams of Tampa; 1 sister, Mrs. O.P. Haynes of Lakeland and 5 grandchildren. - Ledger, Thursday, April 25, 1968
LIVE OAK - Mr. J.C. Connell, Sr., a resident of Live Oak and former resident of Auburndale passed away Sun. March 30, 2014 at Auburndale Oaks due to dementia. Mr. Connell was born June 9,1936 in Pavo, GA. to Palmer Lee and Polly Elizabeth (Carmichael) Connell. J.C. retired as a Police Officer from the Auburndale Police Dept. in 1980 and also retired as a Corrections Officer in 2001 from the Dept. of Corrections. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Live Oak Church of God, past Mason, enjoyed fishing and sitting on the porch watching the birds. A very special thank you to Cornerstone Hospice for all your help.

Charles Philip Guest, passed away May 6th 2014 at his home, of heart failure. Born in Tampa, FL he was a lifelong resident of Lakeland. After high school, he joined the Air Force and served tours in Greenland, Iceland, and Vietnam. Once discharged he attended Florida State University where he obtained a bachelors degree in Criminology. He also went on to obtain a masters degree in Criminal Justice from Rollins College. He spent his working career in law enforcement serving 22 years with the Lakeland Police Department and 12 years with Tampa Police Department. He had recently retired in January 2014 from the State of Florida where he was an elderly abuse investigator.
Survivors include his wife Debbie Guest, Daughter Vicki Newman and her husband Chris, Sons James Guest and his wife Cathleen, David Guest, and step children Tiffany Faulkner and husband Chris, Nick Lanier and wife Heather, Cyrstal LaFountain and husband Jeremy, Katie Zavala and husband Chris, and Chris Lanier; and 5 grandchildren. BARTOW -- Mrs. Connie English of Bartow died of complications of Alzheimer's disease Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) in Lakeland. She was born in Brewster on Oct. 31, 1923, she was a lifelong resident of Polk County. She was a court bailiff for the Polk County Sheriff's Office in Bartow and was among the first women to serve as a bailiff in the state of Florida. >She was a charter member of the Bartow Lioness Club where she served as treasurer and on the board. She was a former secretary of her bowling league. She was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bartow.
Mrs. English is survived by her husband, John English; sons, Jesse Beasley, Palm Coast, Steve English, Slidell, La., Mike English, Kingwood, Texas; sister, Sondra Bowen, Seneca, S.C.; brothers, Martin Crawford, Okeechobee, Charles Crawford, Beulah, Mich.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild. >Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E.
