WINTER HAVEN --> Mr. Timothy Leon Brown's work in the community was extensive, from serving in law enforcement to working with children in numerous capacities."It came natural because his dad was the same way. Their whole family has been active in the community. He has done so much, even with his sickness, he was still active," said his wife, Shirley Davis Brown of Lakeland. The former Winter Haven and Lake Alfred police officer and community activist died of complications of pneumonia Saturday (Feb. 11, 2006) at Tandem Rehab Center in Lakeland. He was a lifelong resident of Winter Haven, he was born on March 3, 1943, and graduated from Jewett High School, where he played on the football team."He was one of the baddest football players for the defense for the Jewett High School Wolverwines," Shirley Brown said. Mr. Brown served in the Marines as a military policeman for four years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. His experience in law enforcement while in the military inspired him to choose a career as a police officer. He graduated from St. Leo College with a degree in criminology and political science.After serving 23 years in law enforcement, he went to work at Garner Elementary School, where he was a coach for several years. His work in the community included serving as a counselor at Anchor House Ministries for boys, and mentoring for the Big Brothers and BigSisters at the Florence Villa Community Development Center. He was a Little League football and baseball coach in Winter Haven and Lake Alfred. He worked with children through the Goodrum-Derby Golfers Foundation, and served as the organization's preident. He was a board member of the Polk County Opportunity Council. He was a board member, past president and vice president for the Florence Villa Community Center. He served on the Board of Transportation for the city of Winter Haven and was vice president of the Boggy Bottom Community Association. He was treasurer for the Northeast Neighborhood Association. He was a member of St. James Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and finance committee member.> In addition to his wife, Shirley Davis Brown, > Mr. Brown is survived by his son, Timothy Leon Brown II, Winter Haven; daughter, Rosiland Brown Smith, Seffner; brothers, Bishop Elliott Titus Brown II, Altamonte Springs, Arthur Lorenzo Brown, Orlando; sisters, Elzeretha Thomas, Vernell Brown, both of Winter Haven, Luzieger Mason, Apopka; two grandchildren.Visitation will be Friday at St. James Free Will Baptist Church on Lucerne Park Road, Winter Haven. A celebration of life will be Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Lincoln Park Cemetery in Auburndale. A Morning Glory Funeral Chapel Service, Tampa. -

WINTER HAVEN - Geneva Campbell died on 6/8/2010 at her home in Winter Haven of heart failure. Mrs. Campbell was a native of Winter Haven and has resided in the area for most of her life. She was a graduate of Jewett High School class of 1944 and has served the Auburndale and Winter Haven communities for over 50 years as a church musician and beautician. >Her husband, Charles Campbell, preceded her in death. >Her legacy includes a loving and devoted son and daughter-in-law Richard Henderson Campbell & Cathy Campbell of Fayetteville, NC; 3 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; a sister Edna Jane Vinson, Amityville, NY; a sister-in-law Estella Calhoun, Winter Haven; nieces, nephews, cousins, the First Missionary Baptist Church family, other relatives, students of music, customers, and many friends. Visitation will be on Friday, 6/11/10, 6-8pm at 1st Missionary Baptist Church located on Ave R N.W. in Winter Haven. WINTER HAVEN - Mary Ruth Counter, 103, stepped peacefully from this life into glory on Thursday, April 16, 2015. Mary was born in Jewett, Ohio on August 14, 1911, and moved to Winter Haven at age 12.  Both Mary and husband Clifford graduated from Winter Haven High School in the class of 1930, and married in 1934. They were both life long members of Beymer UMC and she was a resident of Lake Howard Heights, assisted living facility at the time of her passing. Mary Ruth Albaugh Counter was selected and honored to be 'Miss Winter Haven' in the city's 2011, Sentinel Celebration. She has two sons, Jerry Counter (wife Jo Ann) of Winter Haven and John Counter (wife Mary Charlotte, deceased) of Tampa. Mary Ruth Counter had 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Clifford Leroy Counter and brother, Sam Albaugh. Funeral Services will be at Beymer UMC on Monday, April 20, 2015, with visitation prior to service. WINTER HAVEN - Mr. Daniel Courtney of Winter Haven, FL passed away on June 30, 2017 in Lakeland FL. Daniel was born in Winter Haven, FL to Jack & Fannie Courtney on July 24, 1934. He attended school at Jewett High and was married to Lottie Courtney for 35 years. He retired from the Polk County School Board. Daniel answered the call to ministry at an early age and was pastor of the Church of God, Pillar of Zion, Dundee FL for over 30 years. > Daniel was preceded in death by his father, Jack Courtney,  mother Fannie Bell Courtney, spouse Lottie Courtney, sisters, Laurena Dawkins, Martha Clements, Fannie Courtney, Mary Courtney, brothers, Walter Hammond, Woodrow Courtney, Albert Courtney, Arthur Courtney, John Courtney, Amos Courtney.>  He is survived by brothers: Harry Courtney (Joyce) of Winter Haven, Frank (Theresa) of Lake Wales FL, sister: Florence Welch (Benjamin) of Winter Haven, FL and a host of, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other loved ones. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the All Nations Pentecostal Church, Winter Haven FL 33881. WINTER HAVEN - Dorothy J. Dewdney- Rix, of Winter Haven passed on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at her residence following a brief illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Winter Haven and the daughter of the late James and Louise Dewdney. She retired with 23 years of service as a lead buyer for the Florida Belk Lindsey's Department Stores. She was a faithful member of Hurst Chapel AME Church and a 1956 graduate of Jewett High School. >Preceding her in death other than her parents are: husband, Robert Rix, Sr., sister, Betty Dewdney-Young, and stepson, Robert Rix, Jr. >Survivors are: daughter: Twanna Fay Dewdney, sons: Michael (Shirley) Dewdney and Theron (Michele) Rix, six stepchildren, sister: Clara (Walter) Timmons, brothers: Willie James (Betty) Dewney, Jerald (Norma) Dewdney and Terry (Michaela) Dewdney, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, other relatives and loving friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-7 P.M.
