1939 - 2013

WINTER HAVEN - Jack Maynard Traviss, a Winter Haven businessman, passed away Sunday August 25, 2013 from complications of Parkinson's. Born on October 30, 1939 in Northville, Michigan, his family came to this area in 1943 from Ypsilanti, Michigan.
 Jack was an optician and founder of Lake Region Opticians and Eye Express in Winter Haven and Lakeland. He was past president of the Winter Haven Optimist Club as well as past president of the Florida Optometric Association. Jack also established the Optometric Assistant Program at Traviss Career Center in Lakeland, a facility named after his father, Maynard Traviss.
 After graduating from Winter Haven High School, Jack joined the United States Navy and served in sensitive overseas assignments in the 1950’s at the height of the Cold War. Known for his ready smile, quick wit and warm heart, he will be fondly remembered by his legions of friends.
 Jack was pre-deceased by his parents, Maynard and Gertrude Traviss.
 He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Loretta Jean Pulver Traviss, son Mike R. (Valerie) Traviss, Winter Haven, daughter Kim J. (JP) Powell, Winter Haven, grandson Traviss H. Powell, Brighton, Colorado, brother, James J. (Elizabeth) Traviss, Winter Haven, sister, Grayson (Calvin) Smith, Macon, Georgia, brother-in-law John (Dianne) Truett, Homosassa, Florida, several nieces and nephews, and his four-legged best friend, Tai Tu.
 A gathering of friends and family will be held Thursday, August 29, 2013,followed by a celebration of Jack's life beginning at 6 pm at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home, 645 W. Central Ave., Winter Haven, Florida.
