BARTOW - Vernon C. Cartwright passed away from natural causes Friday, October 19, 2012 at home in Bartow. Born August 1, 1915 in Cora, Florida, he was the son of the late William Marshall and Ida Guttery Cartwright. Mr. Cartwright was a longtime resident of Bartow and formerly worked as a Carpenter for Estech in Bartow . He was member of Main Street Baptist Baptist Church in Bartow. > Mr. Cartwright is preceded in death by his wife, Lillie M. Cartwright and daughter, Glenda Sue Cartwright; two sisters, Nadine Broom and Lillian Cozart. > He is survived by his son, Donald V. Cartwright of Bartow; his three daughters, Barbara Cartwright, Nina Curtis, and Verna M. Lewis all of Bartow. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. >The family will receive friends Monday, October 22, 2012 at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow. Funeral services will follow Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at the funeral home chapel.

BARTOW - Milton Wilson Lyle of Bartow, FL, passed away peacefully, from natural causes on September 30, 2012. Milton was born and raised in Bartow; he was a graduate of Summerlin Institute, and a WWII veteran of the Army Air Corp as a crew member on B-17's and B-29's. He was a retired citrus grower and was a realtor. He was a lifetime member of the ARP church; a past president of the Bartow Board of Realtors, a member of the Bartow Lions Club, and the American Legion. He was a charter member of the Peace River Country Club and served as a director. > Milton was predeceased by his parents (W.A. and Estelle Lyle), sisters (Opal Garrett and Louise Anderson); brothers (Ray-mond Lyle, Grantham Lyle, Joe Lyle, Clifford Lyle, and wife Doris Collins Lyle, his son's mother). > Milton is survived by his wife Anita Doke Lyle, Anita's daughter Susan Brooks (Bob) of Charlotte, North Carolina, his sister Lucile Hastings of San Antonio, Texas, and his son Robert Jamison (Carol) of Atlanta. Milton ("Papa") loved and adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren: grandson Scott Jamison (Darice) and their children Zachary, Patrick and Lisa of Atlanta; and granddaughter Cindy Jamison Taylor (Tim) and their children Katie, Emily and Mason of Dyersburg, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Grace Manor Suites Assisted Living in Lakeland, FL. or the ARP Church in Bartow, FL.  A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2012  in the Whidden-McLean Funeral Home Chapel. owner of Miller-Bulger Lakeland - James was born May 4, 1953 in Bartow, FL, died June 18, 2012 in Manatee County, FL, due to a traffic accident. He married in Lakeland, FL., on June 16, 1973. James Bulger graduated from Lakeland High School in 1971. He was the Contracting, Bulger Contracting Company, BulHed, Bulger Farms, and Bulger Nursery. He attended The Rock Community Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, parents, sister, and brother. He was loved by everyone who ever met him. He was a wonderful husband, son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. BARTOW -- Although Mr. Roland J. Roe Jr. was a large man in stature,standing 6 feet tall and weighing close to 260 pounds, his stepdaughter described him as sort of a "gentle giant." "He was a really nice person. If you asked him to take a look at something, he would come over and fix it for you. He was very generous. He was a passive kind of guy. He just went with the flow," stepdaughter Marcy Hilston of Groveland said. The retired air conditioning and refrigeration teacher at Traviss Technical Center died of lung failure Sunday (June 13, 2004) at Life Care Center of Winter Haven. Mr. Roe, who was an only child, was born in Lakeland on March 3, 1930. He attended Dixieland Elementary School, and graduated from Summerlin Institute in Bartow in 1948.  Mr. Roe, whose father owned an appliance repair shop in Bartow, learned the trade from his father at a very young age. For a number of years, Mr. Roe worked for Crown, Cork and Seal in Bartow until the business closed. He later became certified in teaching and joined the staff at Traviss Technical Center, where he taught air conditioning and refrigeration for 20 years until his retirement last year. "He just knew everything about fixing appliances and air conditioning units. He also knew electrical. He was very handy," Hilston said. Mr. Roe was a gun collector and a former member of the Lakeland Gun Club. He enjoyed woodworking and was planning to set up his own shop. He had been a pet enthusiast since his childhood. He served in the Air Force, working on aircraft radar systems for 34 years, both on active duty and in the Reserves. >In addition to his stepdaughter Mr. Roe is survived by his stepdaughter, Megan Corrado, Eustis. Bartow - Florrie Mae Gaines, of Bartow, Florida passed away December 22nd, in Winter Haven Hospital. Mrs. Gaines was retired. She was born July 27, 1921 to James and Ollie K. Stephens. Mrs. Gaines was a long time resident of Bartow.
 Mrs. Gaines is survived by her son Charles J. Gaines Jr. of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law Carol Gunter Gaines, Hayesville, North Carolina. Also survived by grandsons Michael D. Gaines, Jeffrey S. Peters, and Terron W. Gaines. Florrie had one great-grandson, Corbin Peters.  A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 29, at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at Mt. MADISON - Mr. Marion N. Hampton, Jr. passed away Friday July 8, 2011 in Madison, FL due to cancer. He was born in Bartow, FL and moved to Madison in 1993. Marion was self employed in real estate for many years. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War and received the purple heart and bronze star medals. BARTOW -- Mr. J.A. "Aaron" Helms of Bartow died of respiratory failure Friday (Aug. 12, 2005) at Good Shepherd Hospice Residential Center, Auburndale. He was born March 27, 1924, in Opp, Ala., Mr. Helms moved to Bartow from Auburndale 54 years ago. He owned A&H Tire & Appliance Co. in Bartow for 27 years. He attended Homeland First Baptist & Peace Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of Woodsmen of the World Lodge 106, Eagle Lake and Gold Age Club. > Mr. Helms was preceded in death by his wife, Earline Helms.  > He is survived by his son, Jimmie E. BARTOW - David Duncan Hallock passed away Wednesday, March 07, 2012 at Palm Terrace Hospice in Lakeland of cancer. Born September 22, 1938 in the Panama Canal Zone, Mr. Hallock was a resident of Bartow since 1972 moving from Los Angeles, CA.  He was owner and operator of Badcock Home Furnishing Center of Bartow for over 27 years. He was formerly group head of the ion laser section with Hughes Aircraft in Torrance, CA. Mr. Hallock was a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, with a Masters of Science degree from Cornell University. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Hallock was very active in the community including Elder with First Presbyterian Church of Bartow and chairman of the Grace Diner program; past president and recipient of the George Jenkins Volunteer of the Year Award for United Way of Central Florida; past president of Gordonville Child Day Care and the United Child Care Centers of Polk County; board chairman of Early Childhood Resources; Founding president & treasurer of Friends of the Bartow Public Library; co-founder and president of Families of Polk County, a ministry to juvenile offenders; chairman & former board member: Bartow First Methodist School; past president: Women's Care Center; past president Bartow Performing Arts Council; past president, Paul Harris Fellow & Rotary Club Foundation chairman for the Bartow Rotary Club; former board member and co-chairman of Paint Your Heart Out for the Bartow Chamber of Commerce; active with Guardian Ad Litem; board member: City of Bartow Community Redevelopment Agency. >  Mr. Hallock is survived by his wife of 50 years: Harriet Frazier Hallock; son: David D. Johnny Mofield was Born October 18, 1949 in Columbus, KY passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL., Mr. Mofield was a former resident of Bartow, FL.. He was a graduate of Bartow Summerlin Institute, Class of 1967. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He served with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society under the Presidency of Ron Ray in New York City. He was the recipient of the Alabama Commendation Medal for his service to deployed soldiers of the the 1203rd Engineer Battalion of the Alabama National Guard. >Mr. Mofield was preceded in death by his father: Owen E. BARTOW - Mr. Charlie Lee Turner, Sr., of Bartow, FL, died of heart failure 9/4/2012 in Winter Haven. Born in Bartow, FL., on Jan. 19, 1920, he was a operator for U.S. Steel. Lakeland- Keith Richardson,  PE RLS, born 12/30/1930 in Eustis, Florida to Ivan E. and Pearl Goodson Richardson. Keith died of heart failure 10/18/2013 in Palliative Care, LRMC, Lakeland, Florida. Keith's early years were in Lake County.
 He came to Bartow in 1942 and graduated from Summerlin Institute in the class of 1948. After high school he attended the University of Florida, became a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps and started his engineering career with Jesse V. Boyles PE. During his time with Jesse Boyles he acquired his Registered Land Surveyor and Professional Engineers License. He began his road building career with Mac Asphalt Corp. in Lakeland. When APAC Corp. bought Mac Asphalt he became President of the Sarasota Division of APAC eventually becoming a Regional Vice President. Keith retired from APAC in 1995 and started a consulting engineering firm. He was a founding member and played an active role in Scott Lake Baptist Church in Lakeland. > He is predeceased by his mother and father, brother Dr. Kenneth W. Richardson and sister Gail Bailden. >  He is survived by his wife Joan Burris, daughter Kathy Mann, son E.K., Jr. "Rick", six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, brother Ivan (Glenda) Richardson, Jr.  A memorial service at Scott Lake Baptist Church will be held at a later date. BARTOW - Henry L. Couey, passed away at home from cancer on Monday, February 17, 2014 in Bartow. Born on February 6, 1925 in Fort White, he was the son of the late Champ and Dessie Couey.  Mr. Couey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartow, and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He worked for many years for W.R. Grace and Company as a maintenance mechanic. Henry, better known as "Papa", was a longtime Dixie Youth Baseball coach in Bartow.

Born November 27, 1923 in Brewster, she was the daughter of the late James Franklin and Lavinia Byrd Ashley. Mrs. Allen was a longtime Bartow resident and a member of Main Street Baptist Church. > She was preceded in death by her husband Paul W. BARTOW - Mr. Charles F. Coulter passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008 from respiratory failure. He was born July 7, 1921 in Wauchula, FL.  Mr. Coulter was a lifelong resident of Polk county and a graduate of Lakeland High School. He earned a degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He was a chemist within the citrus and phosphate industry. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bartow and served on the church council, a Board Member and a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Coulter was a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific Theatre, flying numerous missions over "The Hump" in the Burma-Chinese Theatre.
 He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Simons Coulter. > He is survived by one daughter, Sue Jean & David Jones of Plant City, FL; one granddaughter, Christen Jones of Plant City, FL and one grandson, Matthew Jones of Plant City, FL. BARTOW - C.R. "Bob" Fry, passed away from respiratory failure on Thursday, May 15, 2008. Born October 18, 1918 in Cincinnati, Iowa, Bob was the son of the late Charles Roscoe and Donnah Rosetta Fry Bob had been a resident of Bartow since 1965, when he came here from Missouri.  Bob was the owner and operator of Pickens Caladium Bulb Farm. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bartow, along with the Bartow Kiwanis Club where he had formerly served as president and Lt. Governor. Bob also a member of the American Legion Post #3 in Bartow and the Retired Officers Association in Lakeland. A Naval Veteran of WWII and survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Fry served on active duty and reserves in the Navy for 45 years before retiring with the rank of Commander. > Mr. Fry is survived by a loving family that includes his wife, Ruby L. Mrs. Fry was a longtime member of the Bartow First Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Bartow Garden Club. She was an avid Pinochle card player with many of her Bartow friends. > Mrs. Fry was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, C.R. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Bartow. Mrs. Bennett was active with the Cub and Girl Scouts programs for several years. She was a lunchroom attendant with Bartow Middle School and Polk Life & Learning School. She was a bus driver for Polk Life & Learning for nine years. >She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry P.
