MARTHA  E. POWELL  - 83 - Dietitian
LAKELAND -  Martha Elaine Powell died Friday Dec. 30, 2011 at her Lakeland home, of heart failure. She was born November 18, 1928 to the late Ernest M. and Maude Adams Powell in the phosphate mining town of Brewster, Florida. After eleven years of school in Brewster, Martha graduated in 1946 from Mulberry High School.  She then earned a BS degree in Dietetics in 1950 from FSU where she was an active member of Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity. Following a one year internship at Vanderbilt, Martha worked as a dietitian at Monroe Memorial Hospital Ocala, at Mound Park Hospital St.Petersburg, and at Lakeland General Hospital (now LRMC).
  In 1968 she and five other dietitians formed a group called Focus, to serve several nursing homes and small hospitals in the Polk County area.
  In 1980 she became Head Dietitian at Polk General Hospital Bartow, retiring in 1991.
  Ms. Powell was active many years in American Dietetic Association, Polk County Nutrition Commission, and Cypress Dietetic Association of Polk County. She was also an active member of her local AAUW, the Alpha Xi Delta Alumni Association, and Altrusa Club of Polk County where she was named Woman of the Year in 1973. Martha served on the voting polls for many years, and was honored as a "13 gallon donor" by the local blood bank.
 Since 2000 Martha was involved in planning bi-annual reunions of her hometown of Brewster, coordinating a contact list of over 500 individuals and maintaining a Brewster website. She had a life-long love affair with her dogs and cats, and treasured her many friends and neighbors.
  Martha is survived by her sister Stephanie Cecil (Richard) of Charlotte, NC; niece Karen Lowery Cline and fiancé Scott Lemieux of St. Petersburg; nephews Benjamin and Jonathan Cecil, and niece Sara Cecil, all of Charlotte; nephews David Lowery of Lakeland and Christopher Lowery (Jennifer) of Marion, Michigan; and grand-nieces Brittney and Breanne Cline and Mercedes Lowery.
  She was predeceased by her sister Janet Lowery in 2006.
The family will receive friends and visitors on Wed. Jan. 4th from 10-11 a.m. at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 1727 Bartow Rd., Lakeland. Pastor Jeffrey Karns from Grace Brethren Church will lead the service at 11 a.m. on Wed. at the funeral home.
  Interment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.
